Henrik Stenson is First Round Leader at Sun City, South Africa

Shooting a 5-under 67, Henrik Stenson
is the first round leader at the Nedbank Golf Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa. He was leading by one stroke over defending champ, Jim Furyk.

Stenson changed sponsors only one week ago and was using new clubs and balls for the first time in tournament play. Evidently, they work well, because Stenson had five birdies today and no bogeys.

Furyk played similarly with four birdies and no bogeys.

The event pays an astounding $1,200,000 for a first place finish. $600,000 goes to the second place finisher. Even the player finishing in the 12th spot, will pick up $200,000. This is the 26th year the tournament has been played.

PGA TOUR Qualifying School

Every year, dozens of professional golfers fight their way through the first two stages of TOUR Qualifying school and get the chance to play for a TOUR Card. These players may have been dropouts from the 2006 PGA TOUR Season, Nationwide Tour players, or Cinderellas who have been fighting to the final stage. Notable players include German Alex Cejka, Duffy Waldorf, D.A. Points, and Bob May as well as others.

Qualifying will take place at PGA West's Nicklaus and Stadium courses. The event begins November 29th and continues through December 4th.

Many great players have made it to the TOUR through Tour Qualifying School. Last year's class was won of history's strongest. Players who made it to the TOUR through Q-school last season and their rank on the money list:
Brett Wetterich - 10th
Frank Lickliter II - 44th
J.B. Holmes - 59th
Nick Watney - 75th
Hunter Mahan - 83rd
Daisuke Maruyama - 95th
Bill Haas - 99th
Will Mackenzie - 100th
Mathias Gronberg - 124th

The Donald Looks to Build $1.9 Billion Golf Resort

Donald Trump, aka the Donald, offered a plan on Monday to build a new, $1.9 billion golf resort in Scotland. Trump looks to build two championship courses and a golf academy near Aberdeen, Scotland.

Trump, whose mother is a Scotland-native, wants to build 1,000 homes, 36 villas, and a hotel on site to hold 450 bedrooms.

Despite the area's governmental interest in bringing in the project, several environmental groups are protesting its possible construction. The resort would be built on a sandy beach.

Trump already has already built several courses, most notably Trump National in California where The Golf Channel's Big Break was held.

World Golf Rankings: Who is Hot in '07?

The World Golf Rankings for 2006 are mostly in the books, so its time to look at '06's movers and shakers as well as who is rising and falling in '07.
1. Tiger Woods - 21.65
Story: Unless Jim Furyk wins every event in 2007, Woods ownership of the world will not be under attack.
2. Jim Furyk - 8.95
Story: Biggest season since winning the U.S. Open, leapfrogged into the top five, and then two. Still has not won a showdown with Tiger, so 2007 will likely be the season he establishes himself as Woods' rival or falls out of history.
3. Phil Mickelson - 7.80
Story: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Mickelson has certainly lost his dominance early this season and late last after winning the PGA Championship and Masters. We all know the story of Lefty's meltdown at Winged Foot. Time to see if he has the mental side under his control or else will not challenge Tiger.
4. Adam Scott - 7.58
Story: Could challenge Mickelson for third in World Rankings after winning the Tour Championship. His Players Championship win will fall out of the points system soon.
5. Retief Goosen - 6.26
Story: Had a chance to beat Tiger in Asia but failed on the back nine. Not making strong case for being a member of the new "big five" if there is one.
6. Vijay Singh -6.23
Story: Hard to believe he was the world's best two years ago...Career is likely coming to a close, or at least a decline (practicing 24 hours a day is hard in the late 40's).
7. Ernie Els - 5.89
Story: As soon as the Big Easy finds his game again on all four days of a tournament, he will return to the winner's circle. U.S. Open returns to Oakmont where he won in 1994, unfortunately there will likely be no "immovable" mishaps.
8. Padraig Harrington - 5.81
Story: Moved back into the top 10 after winning th Dunlop Phoenix. Watch out below, Harrington is ready to take home some wins in '07 and catch a couple guys up top.
9. Luke Donald - 5.79
Story: Trails Els and Harrington by fraction, could get hot and have a career year in '07.
10. Geoff Ogilvy - 5.69
Story: U.S. Open champion is likely ready for some more wins. Strong performances in Australia and the Grand Slam of Golf.

There's the top 10, but what outsiders are ready to make a move in 2007:
11. Sergio Garcia-HAS to get over his putting woes in big events if he wants to be a player. Can anyone believe this guy is still in his 20's?
12. Henrik Stenson-Swedish Ryder Cup star is ready to dominate.
17. Davis Love III- Told Tom Lehman he would get hot by the end of 2006. He did and captured the Chrysler.
82. Troy Matteson - A win and second place finish in the last couple events of 2006. This guy is flying and poised for more success.

Ames Wins Skins Game

Trinidad and Tobago's Stephen Ames captured his first Skins Game title after three holes of playoff. Ames hit a three foot birdie putt on the third hole of playoff to close out Fred Couples and John Daly. Fred Funk, who won over $925,000 last season despite wearing a skirt, was closed out early and was not able to capture any skins. Ames had been out of the game for several weeks after suffering from a back injury and declined his invitation to play in the Tour Championship for that reason.

Ames won $590,000 with Fred Couples capturing a second place check worth $385,000. John Daly won a single skin good for $25,000. Both Fred Funk and Freddie Couples were eliminated on the second playoff hole where both Daly and Ames made birdie while Ames would seize the final skin and the victory.

The LG Electronics Skins Game, played in La Quinta Ca, is likely golf's best silly season event.

Justin Rose Wins Mastercard Masters

English star Justin Rose won the European Tour's Mastercard Masters by two strokes despite shooting 73. Rose's game came together all week after he finished at twelve under par at Huntingdale Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. Rose had been in contention several times this season on the PGA TOUR, but played a solid round on a difficult scoring day. Only four of the players in the top 10 shot rounds under par on Sunday.

Greg Chalmers shot even par to finish tied for second place alongside Richard Green who fired a three under 69 on Sunday. Queensland's amateur star Aaron Pike finished in fourth after shooting a two over 74. Pike had been leading the event after the first and second days. Australian state Aaron Baddeley (left), who won the Verizon Heritage on the PGA TOUR, finished in fifth after shooting a one under 71.

Rose captured a check worth $218, 287 of the $1,152,033 purse.

Equipment Review: Alpha Golf C830.2 Plasma Fairway Woods

These days, it is hard for a new or small company to make its way in the golf market. Big hitters like Titleist and Taylormade have huge advertising budgets and dish out millions for Tour pros to put their products in the bag. Regardless, the name on the club still doesn't hit the ball. Often, some of the market's best products are not on the shelves of golf chain stores or are overlooked. I got the pleasure of reviewing the C830.2 Plasma 3 Woods from Alpha Golf Clubs, a division of Kent Sports. The company, despite not dishing out the big bucks for Staff players, has already captured 6 RE/Max Long Drive Championships with its popular driver series. Of course, the Alpha driver is not the only cannon in the company's product line.
My Test:
When I pulled the club out of the box, I immediately noticed how light the Plasma 3 Wood was. I also spied the small profile of the Plasma's head. I was excited to get to the range despite the near freezing temperature. I began with a couple of shots off a short tee and was astounded to see the length when compared to the Taylormade 3 wood I was currently using. Having expected that a small company would have "inferior" products to the likes of Taylormade, I was ready to see more. Off the mat, I found that the Plasma was very easy to get airborne, but sometimes soared a little too high for the better player. Still, the quality of the product was spectacular. The Plasma surely will aid the mid to high handicapper, or low handicappers who struggle with control over their woods.
The Look:
I definitely loved the look of the Plasma, especially the sleek, small profile at address. I never have been a big fan of some of the huge woods coming out today that could pass for a driver. As I said before, the club is very light which factors in to the added distance while control is not compromised. Lining aid is a silver arrow at the center of the club.
Tech:
Alpha says that the Plasma borrows many of the qualities of its sister Plasma driver. One of those qualities is the huge distance as a result of its wide design. The center of gravity in the Plasma is strategically placed to create a "sweet zone" providing maximum forgiveness on off center hits. The stock shaft is the Alpha Platinum 65 which weighs in at 68 grams and has a mid kickpoint. Make sure to check out Alpha's fairway wood line as well as their other products at:
www.alphagolfclubs.com. Also, make sure to read Alpha's new blog to track its success in professional golf and long drive championships.

Nordegren and Woods File Libel Lawsuit

Tiger Woods' wife Elin Nordegren is filing a libel lawsuit against a magazine in Ireland. The conflict came during the Ryder Cup when the Irish magazine attacked the wives of several Americans, but focused on Woods' wife who was accused of appearing in Internet pornography.

The magazine issued an official apology and said that the piece was merely satirical. Nordegren was a model and a nanny to Jesper Parnevik before marrying Tiger in Barbados during 2004.

Wie Goes to 17 Over at Casio, Misses Cut

Michelle Wie followed a disappointing Thursday 81 with another poor round of 80 to come in second to last at the Casio World Open. Wie struggled with her swing again as the only female in the Japan Golf Tour's event.

It is easy to look at the fact that she hasn't won in 33 LPGA Tour starts and has made only a single cut in 13 men's events, but we often forget she is only a senior in high school. It is pretty likely that if she focused on dominating AJGA and amateur women's events, she likely would be a psychologically better player without the pressure. It is also quite possible that with every missed cut and poor finish, her game begins to decline. Regardless, Wie still is very young, and no teenage female has made a cut on a men's tour, and few have won in women's events, so there is still quite a bit of promise.

Wie will likely return to men's events early in '07 when the TOUR comes to Hawaii.

Wie Struggles, Shoots 81...Again

Teenage golfer Michelle Wie struggled again in a men's pro golf event after shooting 81 at the Casio World Open. Wie, whose only made cut was in Asia, struggled with her drives as everything else began to fall apart. Wie finished Thursday in 101st, two strokes ahead of Tomomichi Oto. Wie was positive on the prospects of making the cut, "I've been practicing and working on my game a lot, I still have a positive mind-set for tomorrow."

The event's other star, Colin Montgomerie, withdrew from the event due to personal reasons.

Azuma Yano and Tetsuhara Haraguchi were tied at the top of the leaderboard with opening 66's.

Woods Rocks Field at Grand Slam

Tiger Woods again proved why he is the best in the world in Hawaii by winning his seventh career Grand Slam of Golf title. The Grand Slam, an event played by major winners and special selections, is a 36 hole event played perennially. Tiger Woods started the day three strokes back of world number two Jim Furyk, but responded by firing a bogey free round of 66. Woods stood again at the 18th alongside hula dancers and taking $500,000 for winning. Tiger has now made $3 million in Grand Slam of Golf earnings.

Jim Furyk shot 71 for second place, U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy shot 74 for third, and Mike Weir shot 74 to finish last. Furyk and Weir both qualified because Tiger won the British Open and PGA Championship. Masters champion Phil Mickelson declined his invitation, so the next highest in the special ranking system was South African Ernie Els. Els declined to play, thus Canadian Masters champion Mike Weir went to Hawaii.

2006: A Space Golf Odyssey

The second golf swing in space was made by Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin outside the international space station. The shot will surely be the longest shank ever as Natalyia Hearn of Element 21 Golf stated the drive is expected to travel over a billion miles. Tyurin smoked a six iron off a spring like tee outside the international space station. Check out the YouTube video:

This shot was the second ever in space following the last Moonball by Alan Sheperd nearly 35 years ago.

The ball used is considered to be the smallest satellite in history as a tracking device was installed by the company Element 21. Golf fans can check the progress of the ball at e21golf.com .

Winter Golf: How to Fight the Urge

It is definitely true that in order to improve, we can't start at 0 every year having to catch up with the practice lost during Winter. For the north, the cruel winter months strip golfers of any game they had left during the Fall. So how do we combat Mother Nature? Well, there are several solutions to this age old problem:

1. Return to your roots: Like the English do, suit up in hat and coat as well as gloves and face the snow and cold. Nine holes under harsh conditions can be fun, but after 18 you feel like migrating.

2. Move to Florida: Most likely the most costly choice a golf addict has, but hey, golf all year is pretty appealing.

3. Buy a video, interactive golf game: Several computer and video game programs are out now so you can plug a mat to your kid's PS2 and play golf at Pebble Beach through popular titles such as Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2007.

4. Use indoor aids: As a golf aid junkie, I know first hand that there are some pieces of infomercial swing aids that can be used to help keep up the golf skills during the cold months. One of my favorite cheap aids: Makeshift weighted club. While there are weighted clubs on the market for over 100 dollars, a much cheaper solution is to grab an old iron, a golf ball, and some duct tape. Take the ball and place it on the face of the old iron, probably a 6 or 7. Wrap the duct tape around the club and tape all open spots (note: not taping well and having the ball fly of the face in the garage and smashing a window doesn't go over well). This aid helps to build flexibility as well as continued work on swing plane and fighting common errors like coming over the top. A great tool to use with the weighted iron is the Swingyde. The Swingyde is a simple aid which attaches to the shaft of the club and allows you to feel the proper wrist hinge.

Good luck this Winter and Happy Thanksgiving

Great Tips: To Flare or Not to Flare?

In the recently published December issue of Golf Magazine, a reader wrote in asking about where his feet should be placed at setup. This question came about after he observed that some pros flare a foot, both feet, or not at all.

After reading the tip the magazine gave, I quickly tried it out to see that I do need to flare me left foot. The result is a better balanced golf swing leading to cleaner contact with longer, straighter shots. So how do you straighten the feet out?

First, go to a corner in your house and place your feet lining straight out at the wall. Then close your eyes, take a deep breath, and your body will likely twist to the right of the corner or possibly the left. The amount of twist is based on an individual's core strength, so the goal is to figure out how far you should flare your foot. Start with flaring the left foot slightly if you are a right handed golfer and do the procedure again. Experiment with both feet until you find yourself consistently looking square at the crease of the wall.

Easy fix for some common golf problems, especially for those of us who always line our feet square facing the ball. Most golfers lack the core strength of Tiger Woods of Chris DiMarco so we do face core rotation.

2007 NCAA Signings

The high school class of 2007 has produced several amazing juniors who are sure to carry on their success to the college and professional ranks. Golfweek reports that seven of the top 10 ranked juniors have already signed letters of commitment to major NCAA golf programs.

Among those signees is number on ranked junior Philip Francis who signed to the UCLA program. Rickie Fowler and Bob Tway's son, Kevin Tway, both signed to the powerhouse Oklahoma State program. 5 players tied for third place (276): Kevin Sutherland, Harrison Frazar, Robert Gamez, Arron Oberholzer and Parker McLachlin.

Rocco Mediate, finished with a respectable 279 despite losing his TOUR Card for the 2007 season.

TIger Woods Loses to Harrington at Dunlop Phoenix in a Play-off Hole

Tiger Woods seemed unbeatable for most of today at the Phoenix Country Club in Miyazaki, Japan. With six shots left, he had a three stroke lead. By the 16th hole, the lead dropped to two and Woods bogied the shot. Padraig Harrington took advantage of the opportunity, birdied on the 16th and by the 18th both were tied at the top of the leaderboard.

They played the 18th again. Harrington got a break on his second shot. It hit a tree and bounced forward for an ideal shot from the rough. Woods had a chance for a birdie from ten feet, but didn't make it.

Woods is now 45-6 worlwide when leading into the final round.

John Senden Wins The Australian Open

John Senden had an outstanding day; winning the MFS Australian Open at Royal Sydney and setting a course record. His day included 8 birdies. The 35 year old earned the Stonehaven Cup. He was the John Deere Classic winner in the USA this year. Senden said in post-event interviews that his goal now is to focus on major events and being one of the top 50 players in the world.

US Open Champion, Geoff Ogilvy, finished the day one stroke behind, despite the fact that he share the lead for much of the day. At one point in today's final round, 6 players were at the top of the leaderboard.

Stuard Appleby and Gavin Coles tied for third. The round three leader, Nathan Green, tied for fifth with the #4 player in the world, Adam Scott.

Nathan Green Leads after Round Three at The Australian Open

Despite finishing today's round at a one over 73, Nathan Green is still clinging to the lead at The Australian Open. Brett Rumford (68) and Gavin Coles (69) are in second place going into the final day of play.

Green started the day in a strong position. He admits, however, that he struggles when he is contention to win a tournament...bringing to mind another golfer known for choking in the big moments: Greg Norman. Amazingly, Greg Norman shot a 68 today.

Tiger Woods Shares Lead After Round Three at Dunlop Phoenix

The rain poured down at the Phoenix Country Club in Miyazaki, Japan, and made play much tougher for round three of the Dunlop Phoenix.

Tiger Woods struggled immensely and finished the day with a 2-over-72 and is now tied for the lead with Padraig Harrington.

Two Japanese players, Shingo Katayama and Takuya Taniguchi, are in third and fourth place, respectively.

Sunday's weather forecast calls for another day of rain.

Tiger Woods Leads at Dunlop Phoenix

Tiger Woods sits alone atop of the leaderboard at the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament in Miyazaki, Japan. His 5 under par, 65, puts him ahead by one stroke.

Padraig Harrington is in second place. Ian Poulter is two shots back. The first day leader, Shingo Katayama, has dropped to fourth place.

TPC of Sawgrass Back in Business

After a seven month renovation project,TPC of Sawgrass in Pointe Vedra Beach, Florida is now back in full operation. The refurbishment project improved greens and fairways and added over one hundred yards to the course. The famous TPC of Sawgrass hosts the PLAYERS Championship, considered by most to have golf's strongest field.

A TOUR official commented on divots in the 9th fairway,"Do you know what animal did this?"
"Vijay Singh" Vijay, of course, is one of the TOUR's hardest working players and used the ninth fairway as a practice facility during the renovation of the course.

Dicks Sporting Goods Buys Golf Galaxy

The sports equipment retailer, Dicks Sporting Goods, will buy out the golf retail chain Golf Galaxy. The acquisition, expected to be completed by February of 2007, comes after Dicks Sporting Goods attempted to enter the golf retail market with a new chain in The Golf Shop but opted to purchase an already successful chain rather than build their own. The Golf Shop, currently located in Washington D.C. and in Dicks Sporting Goods' home city of Pittsburgh, will complement the new lineup.

Lorena Ochoa Named Player of the Year

After a spectacular season, Mexico's Lorena Ochoa took the LPGA's player of the year honor. Ochoa's victory was hardy surprising after she had arguably the most dominant year of any player other than Annika Sorenstam during the current era. Ochoa clinched the player of the year title by winning her 6th event of the season at the Mitchell Company Tournament of Champions. A seven under Sunday round in Alabama was good enough for a great victory over several of the tour's other young guns such as Paula Creamer.

Ochoa's Player of the Year honor is the first in five years not given to Annika Sorenstam. The 2006 season may signal a changing of the tide on the LPGA tour which leaves golf fans to question if Annika will reclaim her post in 2007.

International Team Wins Goodwill Cup

In a very low key off season event that received very little attention, the first ever Goodwill Cup was won by the international team. Unlike most team golf events, this was played by the Ryder Cup countries against the non-Ryder Cup countries. Retief Goosen led the international team to victory at Jack Nicklaus's Mission Hills Golf Club over the Ryder Cuppers. The Ryder Cup team included several stars such as Seden's Henrik Stenson and America's Chris DiMarco.

O Kanada: Nationwide Tour Championship in the Books

The Nationwide Tour Championship is in the books after concluding Sunday at the Houstonian Golf Club in Richmond, Texas. Even though the week' Cinderella story of Chris Baryla, who was in contention needing a victory to play on the TOUR next year, fell back after a two over 74, Craig Kanada fired a 6 under 66 to win. Kanada needed to have a strong finish to jump from 32nd on the Nationwide Tour's money list in order to come in the top 22. The Golf Channel's "If it ended now" statistic had Kanada's chances constantly jumping up and down.

Matt Kuchar's three stroke lead after round three was not enough after he shot a 73 to fall to third place. Andrew Buckle took second place one stroke back of Kanada. Boo Weekley, who started the day in second place, ended his chance at capturing the Tour's leading money winner by shooting a dismal 7 over 79. The top spot went to Ken Duke who fired a 5 under par 67 to surge up the leaderboard. Duke now has a full TOUR exemption and an entry into the PLAYERS Championship.

The final TOUR Card, given to the 22nd leading money winner on Tour, was Bryce Molder who narrowly held onto his card by staying nearly $6,000 better then Ricky Barnes. Jess Daley, who started the week on the final spot, unfortunately fell out and will likely play on the Nationwide Tour next year.

The PGA TOUR policy board will meet on Monday to consider giving 25 spots to the Nationwide Tour for the 2008 PGA TOUR season. The decision may have came from the success that the class of 2005 found as 12 members of the 20 graduates retained their TOUR cards. Eric Axley, Chris Couch, and Troy Matteson all won during the 2006 PGA TOUR season. Jason Gore, who earned a battlefield promotion during the 2005 season, won the 84 LUMBER Classic in 2005 during his first few weeks on TOUR.

The Nationwide, formerly the Nike and Ben Hogan Tour, has produced many great players. Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman, as well as players Jim Furyk and Chad Cambell, all played on the Nationwide Tour.

Yang Knocks Out Goliaths, Beats Woods by 2

The HSBC Champions tournament is Shanghai concluded late last night after Yong-Eun Yang defeated three major champions behind him. Yang's three under 69 was good enough to fend off a late charge by Tiger Woods who shot 67 to sit two back and in second place. Yang's victory claimed $833,000 of the tournament's $5 million purse.

Woods' round did not start until the late part of the first nine when he made three consecutive birdies on holes 7, 8, and 9. Tiger's strong Sunday finish could not offset mediocre play on Thursday and Saturday.

2005 U.S. Open Champion Michael Cambell destroyed the Sheshan Golf Club firing a course record 64 to tie the best rounds of Tiger Woods and Henrik Stenson. Cambell shot a dismal 77 on Saturday to take himself out of contention, but battled on Sunday to post a great finish and collect a large check.

Goosen looked to have won the event after nine holes, shooting a two under 9 hole score of 34, but started the back with two consecutive bogeys and never came back. Goosen's concentration was smashed after catching a flyer lie and then airmailing a difficult green. Goosen made only one birdie on the back to shoot a 39 for a one over par 73. Goosen looked to have found his U.S. Open winning swing again after hiring a swing coach but failed to pull through on Sunday.
The second best round of the day was posted by American Jim Furyk who charged up the leaderboard after shooting a four under 68.

Yang Wins HSBC Champion Tournament

Yang Yong-eun, a South Korean golfer, won with a two-stroke victory over Tiger Woods at Shanghai's HSBC Champion Tournament. Yang had a 69 today. Tiger actually had a better round, shooting a 67, but it was not enough to overcome the hole he dug by his less-than-great play on Saturday.

Yang takes home $833,000 for the win. Yang hopes to parlay this victory with competing in tournaments in Europe and the United States.

Reteif Goosen, who led after Day Three, finished tied for third with New Zealand native, Michael Campbell. Campbell tied the course record of 64.

Vehix Golf, Callaway Launches Online Retail Using Build and Buy

Callaway Golf, a major player in all part of the golf equipment market, will launch an online "build and buy" retail program. Adam Barr of The Golf Channel reports Callaway's decision to sell directly from their site comes with much consideration. The program will integrate its loyal retailers, who will distribute and send products sold by Callaway, thus not steeping on those who have helped to build the Callaway company.

Callaway has has the Callaway Preowned retail program in place for several years, selling Callaway and its sister companies' used products.

The company's history of producing the market's hot drivers, starting with the Big Bertha, will be continued in 2007 with the release of the square headed driver series to include the FT-I and FT5.

Kuchar Fires 67, 3 Stroke Lead in Final

Four years removed from attaining a top 50 world ranking on the PGA TOUR, a 27 year old Matt Kuchar looks to return. Kuchar, who played his college golf at Georgia Tech, fired 67 to complement rounds of 71 and 65 to move to 13 under par at the Nationwide Tour Championship. Kuchar's round was highlighted by dropping a bomb for eagle as well as a chip-in birdie on the 17th hole. A win at Houstonian would move Matt Kuchar to fourth place on Tour's official money list for the season.

Kuchar's spectacular round in a windy day was the not the only great round as Book Weekley fired a 69 to move to second place. Weekley trails Kuchar by three strokes going into the final round. The Cinderella Story of the tournament was Chris Baryla's surge up the leaderboard. Baryla, who came into the event as the 60th player on the Nationwide Tour's official money list, was in contention before falling five back of Kuchar after shooting even par on Saturday. Bayla must win the event in order to earn his TOUR Card for next season by finishing in the money list's top 22 players.

El Nino Drops to 4 Down at Taiheiyo Masters

Spaniard Sergio Garcia held the overnight lead in Japan at the Taiheiyo Masters. His chance at winning would take a hit on Saturday after Garcia fell to four off the lead in only 13 holes played. Garcia's, as well as other members of the field, were unable to finish due to darkness.

Ryder Cupper Darren Clarke, who has won at the Taiheiyo Masters the last two years, will likely not find a three-pete after shooting a one over 73 on Saturday to find himself in 39th place.

Goosen Pulls By to Take Lead at HSBC Champions

Reteif Goosen pulled to the head of the leaderboard after shooting a 69 on the most difficult day of play at The HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

The best round of the day was by South Korea's Yang Eun-Yan who managed a 67 which put him in sole ownership of second place.

Jyoti Randhawa who was both the day one and day two leader shot a par 72 and dropped to third place.

Tiger Woods had a rough day opening with a bogey on the first hole. He finished today's round with a bogey on 17 and a double-bogey on 18. He now sits five strokes behind the leader.

Play was difficult with windy conditions. 37 players had scores of at least 75. Michael Campbell, who had started the day, tied for third, had ten bogeys. He finished the day with a 77 and fell to 19th place.

Merill Lynch Shootout

The first day of the offseason's first made-for-TV event is in the books and two very different groups take the lead. The Merill Lynch Shootout, played in Naples, Florida, is played by twelve 2 person groups consisting of PGA TOUR players, LPGA players, and Champions Tour players.

Day one of modified alternate shot (both players drive and then choose the best drive), was dominated by the groups of J.B. Holmes and John Daly as well as Scott Verplank and Justin Leonard. Both groups fired rounds of 9 under as Daly and Holmes beat the course with long drives while the laser accurate Verplank and Leonard succeeded from hitting fairways.

The group of rivals Nick Faldo and Greg Norman finished in last after shooting even par. The pairing of Fred Couples and Annika Sorenstam finished only one stroke ahead at one under.

The scrapper pairing of Jerry Kelly and Rod Pampling finished in third place behind the two groups at 9 under with an 8 under par round.
In other news, Daly has filed for his divorce with his fourth wife.

First Ryder Cup Standings Released

The first Ryder Cup points standings have been released and as expected, Tiger is on top. Tiger Woods leads all players so far with 897.50 points followed by Jim Furyk at 606.25. The current standings are obviously lacking in many significant names which will surely make the team. Phil Mickelson has not yet played an event during the new standings period while Joe Durant, Troy Matteson, and Erix Axley are in the rankings top 6.

The top 10 on the list as of the first few weeks is as follows:

Shark Encounter 2 on TGC

Major champion Greg Norman appeared in a second interview with The Golf Channel. Norman again stated his opinion that with today's equipment, Jack Nicklaus would be even more dominant, even saying he would likely drive the ball 360 yards.

Norman also spoke on his mentorship and influence of the current Australian superstars such as Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy, and Aaron Baddeley.

Norman is currently playing little professional golf, participating in very few Senior and PGA Tournaments. He currently owns a clothing line and wine brand as well as other business ventures.

Nationwide Tour Championship: Round 2

The second round of the Nationwide Tour Championship both ended the dreams of many aspiring pros and helped to make their dream come true. One of the most memorable performances this week is that of Brant Snedeker.

Snedeker's first round on Thursday included an amazing finish which utilized all the luck Snedeker could find. On the 17th, a par 3 surrounded by water, Snedeker's tee shot flew way left onto a slope leading into water. The ball flew into the slope hard, and almost guaranteed Snedeker would take a penalty. At the last moment, the ball hit a small sign near the water which was misplaced by Matt Kuchar, sending the ball back away from trouble. Snedeker followed that stroke of luck with a good pitch and sinking the putt for par. On the hard par four 18th, a magnificent finishing hole, Snedker left his ball in the left rough near the green. Snedeker continued his luck with a chip-in birdie to shoot a four under 68.

Johnson Wagner finished near the top of the leader board after shooting a 5 under 67 on Friday. Johnson is second on the Tour's money list behind Ken Duke. Johnson would take the top spot on the Tour's money list by winning. The importance of the first spot on he Nationwide Tour is a full TOUR Card and a spot in the PLAYERS Championship. Duke, the current number one, improved his chances at holding on by shooting another 2 under par round to move to four under.

Jess Daley, who occupies the 22nd spot on the money list, likely has blown his chances at moving up next year after shooting 73 to follow a 75. The 22nd spot will be the final TOUR Card given out, and Daley now needs a spectacular finish to stop his bubble from bursting. Daley can't be too sad though as he began the year as a non-exempt Nationwide Tour player. Daley, as well as all other players in the Tour Championship, earn fully exempt Nationwide Tour cards.

The field is led by Chris Baryla who fired a 6 under round to move into first place. Baryla is in 60th place on the money list and needs to win to make his way onto the PGA Tour next season. Baryla is followed closely by Matt Kuchar, a Georgia Tech graduate, who shot a 7 under 65 to move to second place.

Tiger Woods Pulls a Shanghai Surprise

Tiger Woods, the #1 player in the world, shot an 8-under 64 today at the HSBC Championionship. It was a course record-tying round at Shanghai's Sheshan Golf Club. He is now just two strokes behind the leader, Jyoti Randhawa. Woods followed a mediocre first round of par 72 to move within two strokes of the lead. Woods started the day at seven strokes behind the leaders, but again showed that he is in fact not any other golfer in pulling out huge rounds to get back in the game.

South African Reteif Goosen is in second place at 9 under. Goosen was in contention during last week's TOUR Championship, but failed to come through to spectacular rounds by Aussie Adam Scott.

The course record was actually set earlier in the day by Swede, Henrik Stenson.
The HSBC Championship is not an ordinary European Tour event, considered by many, including Tiger Woods, as the "Asian Major". The event includes 10 of the world's top twenty ranked players.

Randhawa Takes Lead on First Day of HSBC Champions Golf Tournament in Shanghai

Not many Americans have heard of him, but India's Jyoti Randhawa has taken a one shot lead after the first round of the HSBC Champions Golf Tournament in Shanghai. His day included seven birdies. He shot a 65. Having earned $85,000 this year, he currently ranks 248th on the money list and has made the cut only one time this year.

Three players are one stroke behind the leader, including 2005 US Open champion, Michael Campbell.

Tiger Woods sits at even par. This was his first tournament in five weeks. He plans to compete later this month at the Grand Slam of Golf for tour champions in Hawaii and in December at the Target World Challenge in California.

Today's event is the first tournament on the 2007 European Tour.

Nationwide Tour Championship:Who is moving up?

The Nationwide Tour moves to Houstonian Golf and Country Club for the Nationwide Tour Championship. The Nationwide Tour is of course the minor leagues of professional golf offering twenty TOUR cards to the top 22 finishers on the Tour's money list. Fast forward the 2006 season to this week and the pressure cooker that is the season finale takes place. The Tour Championship will of $135,000 to the winner of the 65 player event, thus even the guys in the 60-65 positions could move into the top twenty on the money list. This year, 22 players could earn cards from the Nationwide Tour while the 23rd to 37th players move straight to the finals of PGA TOUR qualifying school. The two extra 21st and 22nd spots for cards are due to battle field status promotions by two players this season. The same rule was in effect last season when Jason Gore won three events, automatically moving to the PGA TOUR and allowing 21st man Bubba Watson (the TOUR's longest driver) to play this season. The Tour Championship is not a display of second rate golf, considering such players as Chad Cambell and Camillo Villegas came out of the Nationwide Tour. Last year, the Championship's runner up was Eric Axley who captured a victory at the Chrysler Classic and a second place at Disney. All four rounds of the Nationwide Tour Championship will be shown on The Golf Channel.

Ball of the Future? Hopefully Not

The USGA has previously requested prototype "short" balls from the major manufacturers. The standard shorter ball got its debut at the Ohio Golf Association's tournaments in the form of a ball that flies approximately 15 yards shorter. The use of a short ball comes in effort to preserve the game of golf against bomb-and-gouge or driver-wedge play.

It is true that in this day and age, the average golfer can hit longer, straighter bombs off the tee due to pumped up drivers at 460 cc and a better golf ball. Of course, how many amateurs think the game is getting too easy? Maybe the game of the casual golfer is not destroying the game, (note: average handicap has seen little improvement in the last two decades), but is the birdie-fest that assaults courses on the professional golf tours a blow to the game?

The Ohio Golf Association, or O.G.A., sought out the answer to that question by requiring all competitors in their state championship to play a uniform ball. Competitors groans could not stop the OGA from forcing the ball on its competitors and the performance was of course drastically different The uniform ball not only flew 15 yards shorter than the players' normal V1X or HX Tour, but also did not produce nearly as much spin as the dominant balls on the marker. Despite the reversion in ball technology, scoring was still generally pretty good. Blake Sattler of the University of Akron fired two rounds of 67 to win the event by 9 strokes on a layout way over 6,822. Two low rounds by the victor do show some signs of a uniform ball being positive. Sattler said in response to the ball's affect on future ball uniformity, "I think it will move the idea forward. But this is just step one in a lengthy process." The ball used was produced by Volvik Golf is known only as the Volvik ProSpect, and could possibly be used in future competitions.

The use of uniform equipment is obviously not widespread, but the OGA's experiment certainly showed the potential of such requirements.

End of the Year Awards

As the TOUR's official season has concluded, several awards for performance and character were handed out. Among those awards, the Payne Stewart Award was given to South African Gary Player. The Payne Stewart Award, given since the death of the three time champion, is awarded to the player who exemplifies golf's traditions and spirit. Other awards include Jim Furyk's capture of the Vardon Trophy, an award given to the player with the lowest scoring average who competed in over 60 rounds. Though Furyk won, Tiger Woods had a lower scoring average at 68.11 but failed to compete in the required 60 rounds. Woods, however, did compete in 50 round which made Woods eligible for the Byron Nelson Award. Aside from the awards, Aussie Adam Scott jumped to fourth place in the World Rankings and can beat out current number three Phil Mickelson based on his performance in several season ending events in his homeland of Australia.
Several statistical leaders:
Official Money: Tiger Woods-$9.941 million
Driving Distance:Bubba Watson-319.4 yards
Driving Accuracy: Joe Durant-78.43%
Greens in Regulation:Tiger Woods-74.15%
Putting Average:Daniel Chopra-1.712

Fall Golf: Winter on the Way

The golf season for the North is slowly coming to a halt as the snow creeps closer and closer The final Saturday rounds take place on aerated greens and rough covered completely with leaves. Aside from the thrill of new sticks or shirts at Christmas, and possibly a "blue ball" snow golf event, the season is dying fast. I played one of my final rounds today on a totally empty course, which is quite a tranquil place when the buzzing of carts and screams of golf outings are missing. What a way to go out, if it was my final round this year, on a perfect day at 65 degrees and sun shine. Fall golf may not yet rival summer for me, but cool temperatures and empty courses certainly does hold some appeal. My only problem today was a disgusting number or lost balls; casualties to the thick carpet of leaves lining every fairway only to add some more difficulty. Of course some of us are lucky enough to live or head South in the winter, greatly extending the number of playable weeks. So, the next question comes to mind: How do you battle Jack Frost? Sure, heading to some rubber ranges that remain open all season does let you feed the golf bug, but does anyone have any other creative ways aside from bundling up?

Azinger vs. Faldo

Former PGA champion Paul Azinger will captain a falling U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2008. With the announcement by the PGA on the new points system and captain, the Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club is almost set to go. Azinger, a cancer survivor, will lead his team against former British Open champion Nick Faldo. Faldo will enter 2008 with 6 years of momentum leading a team who has taken three straight victories from the Americans. Faldo will certainly manage with fire as he is the European's all time leading point scorer in the Ryder Cup. Though rumors surfaced through last week and Sunday, 'Zinger would be the final choice and a last hope for a suffering American team.

Ryder Cup Reformation:Will it be enough?

After the Americans were walloped by the Euros again in 2006 (nearly the worst loss ever if not for some European generosity), the PGA of America has revised its Ryder Cup points system. The new points system, in effect during the 2007-2008 season for the '08 Ryder Cup, will feature several key changes. The biggest change aside from the points system is the new policy of the captain getting four wild card picks. 2008 Captain Paul Azinger will be the first to select four players who were not in the top 8 of the Ryder Cup standings. The PGA's press release provided the following changes in the points system:
* Prize money earned in the 2007 major championships (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship -- one point for every $1,000 earned).
* Prize money earned in "official events" in 2008 from Jan. 1 through Aug. 11 (one point for every $1,000 earned, excluding the major championships and events played opposite major championships and opposite World Golf Championships).
* Prize money earned in the 2008 major championships (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, PGA Championship (two points for every $1,000 earned)
* Prize money earned in 2008 events played opposite the major championships and opposite World Golf Championship events between Jan. 1 and Aug. 11 (one-half point for every $1,000 earned).

These changes look to make sure the best players are in, and possibly eliminate some of the winners and high finishers in the TOUR's bottom feeder events, allowing some of the bigger names to either qualify or be selected by Azinger. The new reform of the points system and captain's picks will likely bring little change to the U.S. team in 2008 unless some of the young guns begin to step it up and the veterans begin to battle with the Europeans. This year's included terrible performances by the mentally broken Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco. The 2008 Ryder Cup will be back in America and will be played at Valhalla in Kentucky.

Nike Sumo On TOUR

The new Nike Sumo series of drivers has found some success and failure on the TOUR, mostly in the hands of K.J. Choi. Choi first put the square headed driver in his bag at the FUNAI Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort where his driving was less than astounding. The following week at the Chrysler Championship, Choi found his first victory of the season and qualified to play in the TOUR Championship. In the TOUR Championship, Choi averaged only 57% for the week in driving accuracy finding himself in the middle of the pack. It is hard to base the value and performance of the square headed driver based on only Choi's use, but it appears that the new geometric shape has revolutionized the industry like that of the Taylormade's R7. Callaway's FTI square driver has found greater use on the Champions Tour in the hands of several players at the Charles Schwab Cup. The Sumo from Nike will be released on February 1st.

Tiger Woods:Course Designer

Yes, the world's greatest and most notable player follows in the footsteps of heroes such as Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus in entering the course design business. Woods' made the announcement after pondering the idea for several years. Woods has not yet decided where his first course will be, but says, "My goal is to provide a unique collection of amazing courses all over the world that represent what I love about golf," Fellow TOUR stars Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson have already designed signature courses. The PGA TOUR reports Tiger will be the chairman of his new company and plans to build courses worldwide for all skill levels. Obviously any course with the Tiger name on it is sure to draw strong appeal. Nicklaus and Palmer have been designing championship layouts for over twenty years, some of which have claimed strong critical success. Palmer's K Club design near Dublin, Ireland hosted the 2006 Ryder Cup and provided a challenge for many players. Woods hopes to share the best traits of courses in North America and Europe, as well as other locations, with players all over the world.

Adam Scott Wins The Tour Championship

Adam Scott, shot a 66 today at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, for a resounding three shot victory over Jim Furyk. The win ranks Scott as #3 on the PGA Money List with nearly $5 million and strengthens his move from #12 player in the Official World Golf Rankings list to his current #4 rank. It was his first win this season on the tour and the fourth of his career.

He will play at the winners-only Mercedes-Benz Championship in Kapalua. That event is two months away.

Joe Durant placed third. Three months ago, his big concern was keeping his playing card. He now has placed in the top ten in the last five tournaments and is 13th on the money list. He has qualified to play in all four major events in 2007.

Adam Scott Pulls Ahead on Third Day of Tour Play & Wins the AstraZeneca Charity Challenge

On day three of The Tour Championship presented by Coca Cola, Adam Scott took a three stroke lead which makes him the leader moving to the final day of play. The position allowed him to win the AstraZeneca Charity Challenge and donate "his winnings" of $100,000 to the American Diabetes Association.

The AstraZeneca Charity Challenge has been taking place all season and awards the leader going into the final day of play the right to donate $100,000 to the charity of his choice.

Vijay Singh, currently tied for second with Adam Durant, leads all players with 10 AstraZeneca Charity Challenge donations. 26 of 34 winners have gone onto win the event.

Tour Championship Play Continues

Joe Durant continues to share the lead today, but his leader-partner has changed to Adam Scott.

Shooting the lowest score of the week was Trevor Immelman who made six birdies and shot a 66.

Comparable to Thursday's play, only six players broke par today.

Vijay Singh finished the day 5 strokes back of the leaders.

The Tour Championship in Atlanta

Joe Durant and Reteif Goosen are tied for the lead spot after the first round of play at Thursday's Tour Championship in Atlanta. They start the day at a 2-under-68.

27 men are competing for the win. Only 8 players managed to break par yesterday.

Durant came out particularly strong with four birdies in the first seven holes. A feat unimaginable, given that just two months ago he was in danger of losing his PGA Tour Card. To make matters worse, his hotel room was broken into. Then, just like a movie, he won at Disney World. He finished in the top 10 in four tournaments.

New Inductees at the Golf Hall of Fame

Five new members were inducted yesterday into the World Golf Hall of Fame in Saint Augustine Florida. Larry Nelson, 59, who won three major golf championships, remarkably never touched a golf club until he returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam. It was the eleventh time Nelson's name appeared on the ballot.

Vijay Singh, who actually was voted in during last year's class, rose from being a worker in the rain forest of Borneo, to being ranked as the #1 player in the world after winning nine times in 2004.

The three other inductees include Henry Picard, a Masters champion; Marilyn Smith, who helped found the LPGA tour; and Mark McCormack, who founded IMG, and helped players achieve megasuccess thru product endorsement.

The number of inductees now total 114. Busts of each member are placed alphabetically which means Nelson will find himself between Byron Nelson and Jack Nicklaus.

Ceremonies were held at the World Golf Village. On a personal note, I spent the day at the Village in April. It is worth the trip.

2008 Ryder Cup Captain Rumors

Rumors were ripe today that Paul Azinger will be named captain of the 2008 American Team for the Ryder Cup.

Azinger has participated in four Ryder Cups. He has won every singles match he played.

Speculation that the official word will come down early next week.
