Accenture Match Play Championship: Day One in Review
The golf world roared back to life as its leader returned from an almost eight month absence from competition. After dominating the early holes of his match, Tiger Woods proved that he hardly lost a step despite undergoing surgery and having a second child during his time off. On that note, the public's attention now turns to see how Tiger will fare as he tries to defend his title at the Accenture Match Play Championship.
Notable rounds from the first day of the event:
Bobby Jones Bracket:
1. Tiger Woods (1) defeats Brendan Jones (16) 3 and 2. The Australian kept the match surprisingly close, though the world's best would outlast the newcomer in the end. Certainly this match will not qualify as one of Tiger's greatest match play beatdowns, but it at least proved that Tiger still has what it takes to win.
2. Tim Clark (8) defeats Retief Goosen (9) 3 and 2. In a South African vs. South African match, the two-time U.S. Open champion was sent home early. Clark will face Woods tomorrow.
3. Hunter Mahan (12) defeats Mike Weir (5) 1 up. In an upset, the Ryder Cup veteran defeats the Masters champion in a close match. Mahan will face Rory McIlroy tomorrow.
Ben Hogan Bracket:
1. Phil Mickelson (2) defeats Angel Cabreras (15) after 19 holes. Choke artist? Perhaps. Mickelson let the former U.S. Open champion go on a late run to almost send Mickelson home early. Mickelson will face a strong Zach Johnson (pictured right) tomorrow.
Gary Player Bracket
1. Boo We
ekley (13) defeats Justin Rose (4) 1 up. In another close match, the unique American was able to outlast England's golden boy in an intriguing upset. Weekley will play Sean O'Hair tomorrow.
2. Peter Hanson (15) defeats Robert Karlsson (2) 3 and 2. Simply put, Karlsson was dominated Peter Hanson. Not much to say there.
3. Matthew Goggin (14) defeats Kenny Perry (3) 2 and 1. Continuing the smackdown of this bracket's h
ighest seeds, Tour veteran Kenny Perry was ousted by the relatively known Goggin.
Sam Snead Bracket:
1. Pat Perez (16) defeats Padraig Harrington (1) 1 up. Ouch. Harrington (pictured left), a three-time major champion, was defeated in a close match to PGA Tour scrambler and famous hothead Pat Perez. Losing three holes on the back nine didn't help Harrington, in the end.
2. Davis Love III (15) defeats Henrik Stenson (2) 21 holes. This match was awesome. Another talented European makes an early exit as Love III fought to the finish. Each player won two of the final four holes, which meant that this match remained exciting down to the wire.
