Jean van de Velde won't be at Open
Owner of possibly the biggest blowup in golf history, Jean van de Velde failed to qualify to the 2007 Open Championship. This year's Open, held at Carnoustie, was the home of his blowing a three shot lead in 1997, culminating a three man playoff won by Paul Lawrie.
Jean van de Velde's only chance at qualifying would be to play in this week's Scottish Open, but he will not play due to an illness nagging him since April, his agent said.
Of course, his blowup in the 1997 Open Championship made Phil Mickelson's 2006 U.S. Open look smart.
