Masters Blog: Friday Update
This weekend should certainly be interesting with scores all across the leaderboard due to an easy Thursday round with tough conditions on Friday.
Some thoughts on Friday's action.
Most Exciting Friday Round: My vote is for Kenny Perry's 67. To go out and shoot that score is one thing. To play in tough weather with difficult pin positions and catch Chad Campbell is something else. To me, there is a really strong chance that Perry will win one for the old boys and rewrite the record books in the process.
Most Surprising Friday Round: Anthony Kim was stunning today. 11 birdies 36 holes would be impressive, but that performance was something else. Dropping 10 strokes off your Thursday score isn't easy to do. Just wow.
Most Disappointing Friday Round: Tie. An even par 18 holes for Tiger Woods was unfortunate. I know the golf world wanted to see one of those monster Tiger days, but he was never able to get it toge
ther. Seven strokes isn't an impossible gap for the world's best player, but a huge comeback today would have been great. Unlike a lot of other bloggers, I am counting Tiger out for this one. Let's face it. This isn't the old Tiger. Not yet at least. Maybe by the U.S. Open he will be ready to smoke the field, but as far as I am concerned, this isn't Tiger's week.
Zach Johnson let me down today. I was thinking that he could be in contention this weekend, but it won't be the case. He pulled an anti-Anthony Kim by putting an 80 next to yesterday's 70. Whoops. At least he has one green jacket.
Best Memory on Friday: Gary Player's final hole at Augusta National during the Masters was excellent. He will be sorely missed. In other news, Fuzzy Zoeller is leaving too. Hopefully, Player will keep joining the King and Jack for the par 3 contest.
Most Likely to Succeed: I like Angel Cabrera's game. He has one major championship already, so I am not too concerned about his nerves getting in the way coming down the stretch on Sunday. He has two 68s already, and consistency is a pretty good thing to have at Augusta. Don't be
surprised if adds another title to his collection.
Fading Fast: Larry Mize has this one. After his 67 yesterday, it looked like Mize would provide the feel good story of this season. It wasn't a catastrophe, but I wouldn't count on Mize to work his way back into contention after his +4 round of 76 today. I am still rooting for him though.
Other Notables:
T6 - Rory Sabbatini - a 67 will get it done. He is at -4 for 36 holes now.
T6 - Sergio Garcia - followed Sabbatini's lead by following a Thursday 73 with an impressive 67.
T11 - Phil Mickelson - shot a 68 today. He is in the hunt now at -3.
T11 - Vijay Singh - had rounds of 71 and 70. Not too bad. He is in the hunt at least.
